We stepped up our play in the 2016 game with our affectionately named robot “F.R.E.D.” or “Ferret Rapid Entrenching Device.” Team 3238 approached Stronghold with one word in mind: simplicity. The result was the simplest robot the ferrets ever built, with only eight motors, no servos, no pneumatics, and only one articulated joint. At competitions, this design proved extremely successful; FRED won two of its four competitions, including the Pacific Northwest District Championships in Portland, and the team earned the right to compete in the World Championships in St. Louis where we competed in the elimination matches on our field. We finished the season with a perfect breach record, one of the most reliable shooters in the Northwest, and multiple Imagery Awards for our pit design and Industrial Safety Awards for our safety program.
