“Fred III” was the third in our line of creatively named robots. Destined to face the demands of the elimination matches once again, Fred III featured an omni and pneumatic wheel pairing, a back-mounted electronics board, and a dual-wheel shooter. Judges were also fascinated by the fully automated cam system, which automatically collected, held, and progressed basketballs to the shooting system and the student-welded arm, which could push down the platform with ease, even if there was another robot already on it. Fred III made it to the quarter-final rounds and acquired many “coopertition” points, along with Motorola’s Quality Award.
